The WordPress dashboard has many user comfort features that are so obvious to see that we completely overlook them. Take, for example, the post admin columns,
What do you notice?
- A list of posts
- Bulk Actions
- An Inverted Triangle?
Look more closely:
The triangle shows when we hover over the Title column. It tells us that the Title column is sortable. Click ‘Title‘ and the list of posts will sort alphabetically.
Hover over the Comment Count speech bubble or the Date title and the triangle will show again. The rows can be sorted into ascending or descending alphanumeric order as arranged by the values in these columns too.
Many WordPress admin pages have sortable columns, for example,
- Media
- Posts
- Pages
- Users
- Categories
- Tags
Look at the next screenshot:
In the Post admin screen we can filter the list of posts so that only posts published in a specific month are listed or so that only posts with a specific category are listed. When you select a date band or category, click the Filter button to filter the list.
The filter options vary between admin pages.
When in the dashboard, hover on different areas of the pages to entice WordPress to reveal more of its secrets.
