When I first meet with a client who wants to get started in Social Media, the first thing I ask them is: “What is your objective?” Most of the time, the objective is more money. But before diving into Social Media with a sophisticated strategy, it is important to listen to conversations and get a feel of what is happening in your industry by reading similar types of blogs, Facebook pages and follow tweets.
Even though the conversations on Twitter are very fast, to be successful on Twitter you must build relationships with your audience. If you are going to follow an influencer, then pay attention to what they are saying. Many active twitterers have their own blogs. Take the time to read their posts and make comments.
If this particular blogger posts an interesting event, attend it. Build your relationships with these online people offline as well and later continue the conversation. One event will lead you to another. Most of my friends who are active in the social media community are very open and real. Because they are passionate about communicating through Social Media, it is natural for them to engage if you ask questions on Twitter. But remember make it real. Don’t send them a tweet asking them to promote your product or service without getting to know them. That is the fastest way you will get unfollowed.
Other tips for Twitter:
- Make your Bio personable.
- Have a link to your website. People want to know who you are before they follow you.
- Have a twitter name that is easy to spell and remember. Personally I don’t like using underscores in a name.
- Follow hashtags or keywords by going to search.twitter.com and type the words in the search bar. In the example below, I used the hashtag (#) plus Miami. Make sure there is no space between the hashtag and the word. It is not case sensitive. By searching for a city, you can find people who are in your town or about events relating to it.
